Save on Shipping with FedEx

We're in the midst of that holiday rush where some (*cough* me *cough*) people are scrambling to get last minute gifts shipped out. We want our packages to get to the recipient fast, cheaply and in-tact.

My choice this holiday season is FedEx. Not only does FedEx Ground cost 10% less than UPS Ground, but the new FedEx Office Print & Ship Centers offer customized calendars, cards, and stationery in addition to packing tips and assistance. With FedEx Office Print Online services, you can even print holiday newsletters and cards to a nearby center of your choice or have them delivered to your friends and family hassle-free.

Here's a hint on how you can save even more money with FedEx: If you open an account at Fedex.Com, you can save up to 16% on FedEx Express services and 8% on FedEx Ground and Home Delivery.

Best of all, when you visit any FedEx location nationwide, their professionals can help you pack and ship whatever you are sending, and give you tips on how to minimize the size and weight of your package to reduce shipping costs.

Right now, anyone who signs up for a free FedEx account can enter their information here to be entered to win an iPod Touch!

Happy shipping!

A Spectacular Christmas

I have a confession to make. I have never seen the Rockettes or the Radio City Christmas Spectacular show before. After seeing both for the first time on Friday at Verizon Center in Washington DC, I learned what I'd missed out on and am now determined to make it a yearly tradition.

The Radio City Christmas Spectacular Arena Tour is fairly new, having debuted in 2008, but the show itself dates back to 1933. Two of the scenes from the original show are performed today: the "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers" and "Living Nativity."

I, for one, was moved to tears by the latter and was happy to see a celebration of the true meaning of Christmas come to life before my eyes. I asked my 9-year-old daughter Natalie, who attended with me, what her favorite part of the show was and she said, "The way (The Rockettes) were able to do everything at the same time."

She was referring to their well-known precision, and she's right. From every little kick, to every little turn, their timing was perfect. But she was just as dazzled by the entire 90-minute performance as I was, waving at the dancing bears and laughing at the "boom" flag shot out of the cannon. At one point, Santa ran down the aisle in front of us and she practically jumped out of her seat.

The only thing better than the performance itself for me, was seeing her reaction as well as the children around me. Eyes were wide, jaws were open and there were tons of "oohs" and "ahhs" from the little ones in the crowd.

One fairly new number, "New York at Christmas," made me long for another visit to New York City. The scene features a tour bus with an LED screen backdrop that makes it appear as if the bus is driving through the city. It was so realistic that I just sat back and soaked it in as if I was there.

The special effects were even more dazzling than the backdrop, costumes and scenery. A few times during the show, huge explosions of "snow" are shot out over the crowd, and glitter falls from the ceiling to create a magical snowfall. Colored streamers were shot out at another point to the delight of the audience.

The show was helpful in answering one of the age-old questions children have about Santa: How can he be in more than one place at one time? So asks a boy by the name of Patrick, who doubts the existence of Santa, despite the faith of his younger brother Ben.

It is then that "Santa" tells Patrick that as things have gotten busier for him, he's had to find a way to be everywhere and does so through the use of magic. That brought us to a fabulous number with dancing Santa clones.

My little girl still believes so I know this number went a long way in putting any doubts she may have to rest. In fact, the entire show made our Christmas much more magical. Indeed...spectacular.

Many thanks to Verizon Center for making this review possible. For information on Verizon Center, including events and ticket information, click here.

Spa Day at Home

There's nothing quite like the feeling of a fresh mani/pedi and I'll never forget the day I shared the experience for the first time with my little girl at the mall (and neither will she!). But in this tight economy, we can't always treat ourselves to such luxuries.

That's why I was SO excited to receive the Magnificent Manicure Kit from Team Mom for review. Natalie had I had a blast using the kit to do a homemade mani/pedi and the best part is that the kit is also educational.

There is a pamphlet that contains science questions about "cosmetic chemistry" for your child to ponder while they make their various creations. For example, when making a "crystal mud bath," kids can learn about absorbency, moisture and solids vs. liquids.

My daughter had the most fun creating her own scented lotion. Included in the kit is a label for the lotion with a space for your child to write the name of their creation. Natalie named hers "La France." :)

As of this writing, the kit is on sale for $15.95 at Amazon.com. Having been given Creative Child Magazine’s 2009 Toy of the Year Award, the kit makes a perfect holiday gift!

K'NEX 400 Piece Tub - Review

My kids were fortunate enough to receive the brand new K'NEX 400 Pieces Tub for review from Team Mom recently, and they have been having so much fun creating with it! The K'NEX 400 Pieces Tub is a flexible building system that lets kids explore and build both 2-D and 3-D models.

Made for ages 7 and up, my 9-year-old found it easier to make the 2-D designs while my 13-year-old son tried the more intricate 3-D ideas. There are 20 different models with step-by-step instructions pictured for your child to try, or they can venture into their imagination and create an original work of art. The possibilities are endless, so this is a toy they can use over and over again, unlike others they may get bored with after just a few uses.

K'NEX works with other brands like Lego so if you already have other systems you can integrate them for expanded play. And kids can make their creations move (ferris wheels and merry-go-rounds that spin, wheels for cars, propellers for airplanes, etc.), so there is plenty of after-building play.

The best part is that all the pieces can be thrown back into the tub for storage once kids are done playing so there's no mess (which helps tremendously when you have a dog in the house who likes to sneak away with toy parts).

The K'NEX 400 Piece Tub retails for $20.99 and is available at Target, WalMart and Toys "R" Us.

Right now, you can win $1,000 worth of K'NEX building sets for your child via K'NEX's "Make a K'NEXion" video contest. Details can be found on knex.com, (bottom, right corner).

Happy building!

Your Voice Needed to Save Animals

IMPORTANT UPDATE/CORRECTION! I just received word from Kendra that Casey was actually rescued 5 minutes before he was to be put down!!!!!! (she had not been aware of this until just now) I cannot express enough to you how much joy this brings me!! But please remember the other dogs out there that aren't as fortunate as Casey when you read this post and please speak up for them. Thank you!
*********************************

A few weeks ago, I found out about a sweet dog by the name of Casey who was in need of being rescued:

Lukas and Kendra Jade Rossi had been working hard to get the word out about Casey (Kendra made the video above for him), and many others joined in, including myself. Pleas were made via Twitter, Facebook and other networks, and the Rossis even offered to cover Casey's adoption costs.

Unfortunately, no one came forward and Casey was put down (see update/correction above...Casey was actually rescued 5 minutes before being put down). I was so devastated that I vowed to do whatever I could to help keep this from happening to other dogs like him. No animal that happy, young and loving should have to be put down. It shouldn't have to happen to any animal...period.

Kendra and Lukas run a wonderful group called Rock Star Rescue and have gone above and beyond in trying to save these precious animals.

If that photo above cuts to your heart as much as it does mine, there is something you can do. Right now, there is a critical protest being planned for Saturday, November 21 in Los Angeles to demand a progressive, no-kill general manager for the city. The picket is being organized by Animal Defense League-Los Angeles, but you do NOT need to be a member to join in.

Here is what Kendra wanted to share with all of you about this important mission:
"The general manager of LA Services has big shoes to fill after Ed Boks, who created new relationships with the rescue organizations of Los Angeles. The new manager of LA Animal Services needs to maintain and improve those relationships in order to truly create a no-kill LA.

The city can't do it alone and should utilize those of us that are willing and able to help.

Thousands of happy, beautiful, healthy dogs and cats and even moms and babies die unneccesarily every week in the Los Angeles shelters every month because of lack of cooperation and education.

I believe that every living animal should have the right to live. And if we do not take care of them, and fight for them, who will?

We have a voice, we need to make it heard."

I couldn't agree more. If you'd like to make YOUR voice heard, visit KendraJadeOnline.com (second post down), and/or email rockstarrescue@aol.com for more information. Be sure to visit Rock Star Rescue as well for other ways you can help if you're not in the Los Angeles area.

Win an iTunes Gift Card Courtesy of Holiday Inn

With the holidays fast approaching, I know many of you are getting your travel plans set in place. Whenever we travel to visit my family in Virginia Beach, we always stay at Holiday Inn on the oceanfront.

Not only are they family-friendly and affordable, but Holiday Inn offers a wonderful rewards program where we've earned points toward free stays from our previous visits. And now, Holiday Inn is encouraging people to take a new approach to travel by being a BudJetSetter (say it really fast...it took me a minute to get the double-meaning, lol).

Holiday Inn doesn't want a few miles to stand in the way of enjoying the holidays with your family. Here are some fabulous ideas on how you can be a BudJetSetter and get the most out of your holiday travel experience:

Girls Great Escape: You love your father and brother-in-law and all, but sitting on the couch for 10 straight hours watching football isn’t exactly the type of holiday cheer you’re looking for. Take a much needed break from the holiday hoopla and book a room at a relaunched Holiday Inn instead. Not only will you be able to come and go as you please, you’ll relish in the privacy of snuggling up in Holiday Inn’s new, crisp bedding with “soft” or “firm” pillows to choose from while you watch a girly holiday flick. Other BudJetsetter tips:
  • Treat yourself to some fabulous art – for free! Scout out local museums in the area for a dose of culture. The originals may be out of your price range, but grab a poster in the gift shop as a treat.
  • De-stress from the holiday madness by creating your own in-hotel spa. Give yourself a mini facial by washing and exfoliating in a steamed bathroom. Replenish and revitalize hair using Holiday Inn’s new coconut verbena shampoo & conditioner from Bath & Body Works. Then for an extra touch use lavender oil on your temples or, use a lavender face mask while you catch some zzz’s.

Guys, Listen Up!: While you may want to give the woman in your life a little bling, we understand that budgets are tight. But you can still tug at her heart strings by whisking her away for a romantic holiday weekend that won’t break the bank. In fact, you don’t even have to go far.

Relaunched Holiday Inn properties are conveniently located all over the country from metropolitan cities to small towns off the beaten path – Book a room for a night or a weekend, grab some Prosecco and let the relaxation begin! Hint for Dads: getting mom away for a night like this may be exactly what’s on the top of her wish list! Other BudJetsetter tip:
  • Research local concerts, fairs or skating parks that might require a minimal entrance fee and make it a date night.

Travel Gurus, rejoice: You know that you can find Holiday Inn around the world, right? Give yourself or a friend the gift of adventure and hit up a hip or exotic destination this season instead. For some inspiration, here a few destinations to choose from below. All you have to do is decide where to go, cash in some airline miles for the flight, and your budget will be sure to thank you!
  • Nairobi, Kenya for about $215/night
  • Lisbon, Portugal for about $107/night
  • Papau New Guinea for about $224/night
  • Christchurch, New Zealand for about $132/night

To help you enjoy your BudJetSetter journey, Holiday Inn, in partnership with Weber Shandwick, is offering two lucky readers of So a Blonde Walks Into a Review a $10 gift card to iTunes (one $10 card per winner). Perfect for creating your favorite mix of music for a holiday road trip!

No Regrets! Giveaway, Interview and Review with the Fabulous Sarah Ivens

Tell me which you regret more: That night back in college where you had a little too much to drink and you can only piece together 95% of the evening? Or having your loved one pass before you could tell him/her how you really felt?

Regretting the things we haven't done, rather than those we have, is the premise behind the book "No Regrets: 101 Fabulous Things to Do Before You're Too Old, Married or Pregnant" by Sarah Ivens.

"Fabulous" is a fitting word for the title, as Sarah herself exudes fabulosity through every page. Not only is she the Editor-in-Chief of OK! Magazine (which alone counts as ultra fabulous in my book), but she has done all but one of the 101 ideas listed in her book. From exotic travels, to indulgent feasts, to the simple pleasures in life, "No Regrets" has it all.

I think this one paragraph from the book about the wonders of Bourbon Street sums Sarah up perfectly:
"I've been lucky enough to meet George Clooney at the Golden Globes, dance with Sharon Stone at the Oscars, and go behind the scenes at New York Fashion Week, but nothing compares to N'awlins."

See what I mean? This girl knows how to have fun!

Consider "No Regrets" to be a bucket list for chic, girly-girls. A glam list if you will. And even though I am married with three kids, and getting closer and closer to what might be considered "old," I am still striving to accomplish at least a few of Sarah's ideas.

While reading, I tended to get excited when I could cross off an idea as already accomplished, such as "buy sexy underwear." I always refuse to wear anything but! There really is something for everyone in here, so even if you can't go on an African Safari, you CAN "be the first to apologize," or "throw yourself a party."

On the top of my glam list:
  1. Rock the Microphone at Karaoke (while I've done an online version of this, I've yet to do it live in public.)
  2. Splash Out in a Burberry Raincoat
  3. People Watch in Paris
So what's the one thing Sarah hasn't been able to do?

"The one thing I couldn't do of my 101 things was visit the Taj Mahal," Sarah told me. "India was declared unsafe just before the trip, so I I had to postpone my visit and rely on multiple accounts of the place from close friends and guide books. I need to go there before I'm too old for sure."

What would be Sarah's biggest regret in life if she weren't able to accomplish it? "My biggest regret in life would be if my friends and family failed to realize how much I love them," she said. "Since writing this book, I am trying to live more in the moment and appreciate the smaller things and people, not just bigger things and things money can buy."

I asked Sarah what one thing from her list of 101 ideas she would do all over again and she picked one that I found fascinating myself. "Swim with sharks in Bora bora - apart from my wedding day, it really was the most exhilarating time of my life!"

And the one idea she would recommend for all of you? "Compete with yourself - not your girlfriend," Sarah advised. "Jealousy and bitchiness get you nowhere. The race is long, and only with yourself."

Told you she was fabulous. :)

Thanks to Sarah and Random House, I have a copy of "No Regrets" to give away to one lucky reader! To enter, simply leave a comment letting me know what you would put at the top of your "No Regrets" list and why.

Be sure that there is an email address for you that I can find, or your entry will have to be disqualified. By entering, you automatically agree to all the rules and disclaimers listed here.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: Diamond Edition Review

Nothing can turn a bad mood into a good one quite like a classic Disney movie, with "Snow White and the Seven Drawfs" being at the top of the list for me (especially the clip above).

And while the drawfs dig for diamonds, Walt Disney Studio's Home Entertainment (WDSHE) has released "Snow White and the Seven Drawfs: Diamond Edition," which includes two Blu-Ray and one DVD disc(s). Definitely a huge upgrade from our old VHS edition (you can save $10 on an upgrade from older versions, btw. Just click here. Offer is only good until October 20!)

Did you know that this movie is the one that "started it all" as it was the first full-length animated feature? So it's fitting that it is also the premiere entry into Disney's all-new Diamond Edition product line. It's also the first film ever to have a motion picture soundtrack. The film has been in the Disney Vault since 2001, so this is the first time it's been released in any form for eight years!

You MUST see this fantastic trailer for the movie:

So exciting! And when my review copy arrived from the One2One Network, I couldn't wait to sit with my family and enjoy the magic of Snow White all over again!

While the Diamond Edition includes a regular DVD, the most magic is found in the Blu-Ray discs. There are so many wonderful benefits of Blu-Ray, my favorite being that it is more scratch-proof, and thus kid-proof, than a regular DVD.

Here's a list of the wonderful features you'll find in the Diamond Edition:

Picture & Sound

First time ever in high definition 7.1 sound
Disneyview – expanded viewing experience
All-new Music Video (I personally LOVED this feature!)

Disney Family Play

What Do You See? - Decipher the scrambled image
Mirror, Mirror on the Wall – Which princess are you most like?
Jewel Jumble – test your matching skills

Backstage Disney

Snow White Returns – Newly discovered storyboards. Was Walt planning a sequel?
Hyperion Studios – Explore Walt’s original studio
The One That Started It All – See how Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs forever changed the world of movies

Classic Bonus Features

Dopey’s Wild Mine Ride Game
“Heigh-Ho” Karaoke Sing-along
Disney through the decades

And more!

I think the most fascinating feature included in the Blu-Ray disc is the "Disney View." Acclaimed artist Toby Bluth was able to draw beyond the borders of the classic full frame cinema and fill the otherwise dark edges of the screen with beautiful custom imagery, giving audiences a new view of this classic, animated film.

Here's a taste of all that Disney Blu-Ray has to offer:

In all, 14 of the most treasured Disney animated classics will be released through 2016 in the Diamond Edition line.

Click here to check out the official site for "Snow White and the Seven Drawfs: Diamond Edition." Warning - The beautifully animated, interactive diamond game on the site is highly addictive! You'll feel like you're right there in Snow White's world!

As of this writing, the Diamond Edition set, which normally retails for $39.99 is available at Amazon.com for only $19.99 and is eligible for free shipping. Hurry and get yours now because it is only available for a limited time before it goes back into the Disney vault!
